After graduating from the Design Academy in Eindhoven, De Rijk started his own workshop in 1987. From here, he - apart from creating designs of his own - works on commission for architects like O.M.A. and Rem Koolhaas and conducts research into new materials.

"It was always my intention to be able to work with a range of different materials," De Rijk says. "I wanted to develop techniques and processes that would make it possible to create series of products. That's why I started casting in ceramics and plastics."

The liquid dish for instance, is mainly a demonstration of its material; polyester resin. This material can be made in many different colors as well as grades of translucency. The dish's shape refers to the process of a liquid becoming solid.

His ceramic bowls are studies in size and proportion. Starting off with a parabolic form, De Rijk's intention has been to make a range of shapes by determining the smallest possible changes in size that result in substantial differences. Through fine calculation, a matrix of 54 different sizes has been developed that can form many different sets of tableware.
